im new here obv, and i think i read this right saying this was the off topic forum....unless im retarted or my dictionary is broken. anyways, my names ian and im from ny. i got this site from the vortex where im normally stuck(same name there). my love for vw has me wanting to get into the finnish vw community as much as i was involved in it back home. u guys have wörthersee among other great shows here in europe and im used to H20 and waterfest etc back home. i had to sell my car to be able to afford my stay here in finland. i notice the exact model isnt here in finland, but it was a 03 gti 1.8t 20th anniversary. not sure if ur all familiar with the specific model since it was only offered in the states to my knowledge. they made 4000 in 3 colors, imola yellow, jazz blue(mine) and black magic pearl. it had the same bodykit from the german anniversary gti, and recaro seats etc. i also had an 82 rabbit which was gonna either get a 16v turbo or a vr6....but again, im here so i had to sell it all. im hoping theres atleast a big vw scene here in finland, the uusimaa area atleast since im in espoo. im used to goin to meets with a bunch of vw nuts and having a bbq, having some beers, and going on about the projects we have that never get off the ground haha. my finnish isnt up to snuff yet but im in classes. ill try and participate here tho. and hopefully u guys have some meets and i can see what finland has to offer the vw world .\,,/

feel free to contact me via messenger if ur in espoo. i went from friends and cars in america.....to no cars no friends and a big fucking forest called mankkaa haha.

Welcome, I'm not from Espoo, but in Finland we have this thing called meetings and I think they drink coffee instead of beer... I also think that U.S model Gti is called Golf in Europe, so the basic car is allmost the same, but you did have rare special model.

I have one friend from the U.S. and he is also living near Helsinki. Helsinki/Espoo neigbourhood is also called "Pääkaupunkiseutu" or "PK-seutu".

25th anniversary model was never sold in Finland. Only standard 150hp GTI's...

haha, sounds like a hell of a deal, hoep you had a good reason ;)

the vw scene here is relatively small, during the winter the people are not that active for obvious reasons but I think there are some occasional local get-togethers. there are atleast some meetings in the summer, they can be a bit small but probably more enjoyable than the big shows from a vw enthusiasts point of view.

welcome to Finland!

Welcome to Finland, and welcome to our website!

How long have you been here? Now the weather is the worst... dark and rainy. Soon it will be much better, at least for us, quattro drivers ;)

As arc just said, the shows from this year are practically over... but still there are some "gas station gatherings" almost every week somewhere. During the wintertime everyone is building their cars for the next summer. Or should be... :)

Even during the summer there are only a few meetings for just VWs (or VAGs). I think the biggest VWs-only -meeting in Finland is Bug in Finn, which is originally an aircooled meeting, but nowadays some watercooled cars too... just like the biggest VW-meeting in Scandinavia, Bug Run in Sweden. For me (and many others) it's been a tradition to spend the first weekend of June with our dear neighbours :)

At summertime there are also almost every weekend some racetrack events (x-treme.fi, radalle.com, our own Sunday on Racetrack... and many others) where you can take your own car and try your skills on many Finnish racetracks.

And don't forget to visit the national rallies and sprints, they are really fun to watch... just like the World Rally Championship race, Neste Rally Finland.

This is the land of motorsports, I'm pretty sure you'll see some interesting things here.

Planning to stay long here?

Nearest big VW happening is Bug Run in Sweden I think. http://www.bugrun.com/ Sweden and Norway has different/bigger car scene anyways.

Most of the local VW meetings are just bunch of guys meeting at the gas station and having coffee ;) I think.

And of course there is quite some track days in Finland like VW Open, Sunday on Racetrack and radalle.com.

kiitos
well i plan to stay as long or as little as a job can provide me. if i can find a job here that can allow me room to move up and afford to live here, then i stay. if not, then i go back home. so its all up in the air for now. all i know is i really miss driving. im not used to being without a car so it kinda sucks for now. oh and bug run sounds awesome. i always love long distance road trips to shows. last one i went to was in 04 H20 in maryland. its in america of course. but it was such a big show and all the hotels were booked and the lots all filled with cars. crazy crazy times. anyways i figured id show a pic or 2 of my old cars. the gti i actually sold to my dad so i could always buy it back should i want. but the rabbit is gone :(

and my rabbit

it looks decent in the pics but after i cleaned thing up inside i saw the gremlins it was hiding. typical mk1 issues im sure u all have or had.

as for the meets or racing things.........ive always wanted to be one of those crazy people watching the wrc while the car flys by u at high speeds. i dont really keep up with the wrc much anymore tho, so i dont know when the finnish rally is....isnt it over already? ah well anyways itd still be fun :)

Neste Rally Finland was already at mid of August and will be next year around same time...It between there will be lot of action in motor sport scene.

E.g here's the one place where you can check if something is going on somewhere close
http://www.ralli.net/rn/modules.php?name=Kalender
(Espoo is not best place live is this vice, since most of the races are on countryside).
Hopefully u guys have some meets and i can see what Finland has to offer the vw world .\,,/

Besides Neste Rally, I think smaller national rallies like F-cup or rallysprints are even more fun to watch...

thats an awesome write up so far reds. im sure that thing is gonna be awesome when its finished. and i have to admit, ekkoj was one of my inspirations too. that car.....can it be any better? i never thought id love bali green. i saw u werent sure what color u were going for. do u have any ideas at all? ever since i came across black magic pearl ive been addicted. but im leery on the whole waxing it more often than normal cars since the marks stand out more. im just too lazy haha. i dunno if uve considered these colors but theyre from the audi tt. colors like nimbus grey....and i dunno the color name but it was something like primer grey. it looked awesome on the tt. also for the rat look, theres always flat black :P. and that picture of the car in its winter bed.....priceless haha. good stuff, best of luck with it :)

as for the stupid swedes remark, well my family backround is norwegian and my grandmother still curses them haha. i felt it only fitting to put it as a signature :P

edit:i figured wtf is the point of mentioning colors without pics....so here

nimbus grey....
http://www.dub-nation.com/show/dynoday/ ... day_38.jpg

the other grey was called aviator grey....
http://a4.cpimg.com/image/50/55/2693742 ... 00155-.jpg

not the best pics, but ive seen mk1 and 2s these colors at show and they always stood out. not sure if its what ur lookin for but its an idea :P

Ekkoj`s car could be much better, but it`s a sweet ride for sure. Some things went i bit wrong like for example bondoing the rear panel to the side...it`s going to crack for sure. But anyway, first-timer and did really well. Hope i can better it :D
His car is Lofotengreen btw...
I`ve decided the whole color-theme for my car. Including interior/engine bay.
Still not 100% sure but i think it`s going to work just fine. Personally i don`t much like gray but some audi silvers are cool for sure. Gallardo yellow would be cool too...
